January Thaw
This morning’s light comes slowly.
In the dark I rub my eyes
once
twice
Rats, I thought.
I’ve broken the thermometer
because that reading can’t be right.
I stepped outside
bundled
sure it was broken.
It really is almost 40!
It isn’t broken.
It’s almost 40.
If it stays the snow will melt
and I will be on patrol
plastic bag in hand
cleaning up after the dogs
and loving it.
The joys of the January thaw.

Oh joy for your poem! I can almost see mother earth.
@GoodGuyTheBoss - Outside chores complete – patio shoveled, compost turned (sort of), dog manure taken care of. And I didn’t wear gloves or scarves – just boots and a Carhart sweatshirt in addition to the other things one wears when one goes outside and doesn’t want to get arrested. Ya know! The January thaw has just made me giddy!
The January thaw may have its good points (every time the temperature is above zero has its good points), but I don’t trust it. I’m waiting for the big ol’ Spring Thaw!
